About International Overdose Awareness Day

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died from overdose, and acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind.

The campaign raises awareness of overdose, which is one of the world’s worst public health crises, and stimulates action and discussion about evidence-based overdose prevention and drug policy.

IOAD also acknowledges the profound grief felt by families and friends whose loved ones have died or suffered permanent injury from a drug overdose.

International Overdose Awareness Day in Sullivan County

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, although Sullivan County no longer holds the highest overdose rate in New York State—ranking 6th as of 2023—it remains among the most affected counties, despite ongoing efforts that have led to a significant reduction in overdose deaths in recent years. In addition, Sullivan County was federally designated as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA). Being classified as a HIDTA means that Sullivan County is recognized as a critical area for intervention and support, necessitating a coordinated response from local, state, and federal agencies to combat drug trafficking and its associated consequences.

Thank you for being part of the 5th Annual International Overdose Awareness Day; an evening of hope and a time to honor those lost and support individuals and families who are struggling and in recovery.
